First, the Bodhisattvabhūmi (Dichi). As for the nine kinds of dhyāna: first, [dhyāna of] intrinsic nature; second, all[-inclusive dhyāna]; third, difficult [dhyāna]; fourth, [dhyāna entering] all gates; fifth, [dhyāna of] good persons; sixth, [dhyāna of] all practices; seventh, [dhyāna that] eliminates afflictions; eighth, [dhyāna of] this world and other worlds; ninth, pure and purifying [dhyāna]. In the text, the first and last two dhyānas are briefly shown. The ninth dhyāna is the transition from the tenth ground into wondrous enlightenment; hence it says that all entanglements of common and distinct delusions, whether active or residual habit-energy, are completely exhausted, whereas from the tenth ground downward there are all active and residual habit-energies. The treatise interpreting the Avataṃsaka does not establish equal enlightenment; the tenth ground is itself equal enlightenment. To say that both active and residual habit-energies of common and distinct delusions are completely exhausted means: "common" refers to the four entrenchments, and "distinct" refers to fundamental ignorance. The active instigations of common delusions are exhausted at the seventh faith of the Perfect [Teaching]; their habit-energies are exhausted only upon reaching buddhahood, together with distinct habit-energies, because our school differentiates the sixteen gates of the four [fruits] regarding the habit-energies of the Hīnayāna. As for distinct delusions, the stages of severing the forty-two grades are as usual, and the habit-energies are detailed as explained in the Commentary on the Vimalakīrti (Jingming shu). In the Perfect Teaching, beginning from the first abode and ending at the Dharma Cloud [ground], all views are severed completely, yet habit-energies still remain. At equal enlightenment, entering the gate of redoubled profundity, for thousands of myriads of koṭis of kalpas one re-cultivates ordinary affairs; the perception of principle is distinct, the habit-energies are further attenuated, and affairs are like faint smoke. Citing the Bodhisattvabhūmi's "pure and purifying dhyāna free from all views," it therefore only explains the habit-energies of views. If one cites the Upāsaka-śīla Sūtra (Youpose jing), which states that the tenth ground severs the habit-energies of craving, and the tenth ground is itself equal enlightenment, does one not then enter redoubled profundity? Therefore we know that beyond severing the active instigations of distinct delusions, one further enters redoubled profundity to sever habit-energies; the text is exceedingly clear.
