First, he clarifies that the perfect essence in the various scriptural corpora is king. The king of sūtras that is the Middle Way has a single essence, but establishes different names according to what is suitable and delightful to living beings. Thus the previous text stated: "If it is said that the Middle Way is the sūtra, it is the king." In which sūtras is this spoken? It is within the four flavors such as the Avataṃsaka where the scriptural essence is spoken of as the dharmakāya and so forth. However, one must distinguish what is king and what is not king within the four flavors. For instance, the Avataṃsaka corpus contains three kinds of sūtras: its intrinsic perfect middle and its middle that receives the separate [capacity] are both sūtras and kings; its intrinsic separate teaching middle is a sūtra but not a king; therefore, regarding the dharmakāya, one must distinguish the separate middle. The Tripiṭaka only has the two truths of mere emptiness and real existence; it is a sūtra, not a king. Within the Vaipulya corpus, all nine kinds of sūtras are present: the intrinsic perfect teaching middle, the middle of the perfect receiving the separate, and the middle of the perfect receiving the shared—these three are kings of sūtras; therefore the designation "true mark" applies generally to these three kinds. The other six are sūtras, but cannot be kings. Within the Prajñā corpus, there are no two [truths] of the Tripiṭaka; it has seven kinds of sūtras and is also identical to the Vaipulya: three are kings of sūtras and attain the name "Mother of Buddhas," while the other four are not kings. The Saddharmapuṇḍarīka is the solitary perfect; it is a sūtra and is a king, for because it opens the provisional, it unbinds the topknot and gives the jewel. In the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], all nine kinds know the perfect middle; there is none that is not a king of sūtras. All sentient beings will without exception become buddhas; who would not take the direct cause as their master? Therefore, among the various great corpora, the king of sūtras that is the Middle Way has this waxing and waning; it is merely the single Dharma-nature that establishes these different names to serve as the essence of the various sūtras.
