Second, from "As a metaphor" downward, he uses the human kings of successive dynasties as a metaphor. "The various surnames" refers to the surnames of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors. Taihao of the Fuxi clan had the surname Feng; Yandi of the Shennong clan had the surname Jiang; the Yellow Emperor of the Youxiong clan had the surname Gongsun—these are the Three Sovereigns. Shaohao of the Jintian clan, Zhuanxu of the Gaoyang clan, Emperor Ku of the Gaoxin clan were all of the Ji surname; Emperor Yao of the Taotang clan had the surname Yiqi; Emperor Shun of the Youyu clan had the surname Yao—these are the Five Emperors. Hence it says "the various surnames." "Rising in alternation in accordance with the cycle" means corresponding to the cycle of the mutual generation of the five phases in Heaven. Fuxi corresponded to the wood cycle, Shennong to the fire cycle, the Yellow Emperor to the earth cycle, and the Five Emperors are deduced sequentially from these. "Dragon Masters": when Fuxi first arose, there was an auspicious omen of a dragon, and so he recorded offices by means of dragons. Therefore the Zuo Zhuan says: "The Taihao clan recorded by dragons, and so they were Dragon Masters and used dragons for names." "Bird Officials": when Shaohao first arose, there was an auspicious omen of a phoenix, and so he recorded offices by means of birds. Therefore the Zuo Zhuan says: "When Shaohao Zhi arose, a phoenix happened to arrive, and so they were Bird Masters and used birds for names." "Establishing hegemony according to the times" means ruling as kings over all under Heaven in accordance with the cycle. "Although a hundred generations differ" means that their reigns and designations are not identical. "The sovereign king is one" means that all are masters of all under Heaven.
