First, based on the sūtra, matching with the four virtues. Because a person of the Great Vehicle clearly understands that the substance of the five precepts is the nature of mind, whether receiving or upholding them, each accords with this nature. The nature possesses the four virtues; therefore, not one of the five is anything other than permanence, bliss, self, and purity. This is the general correspondence. One can also match the five individually to the four virtues: The nature of mind and sentient beings has no arising or ceasing; therefore, upholding the precept of non-killing in accordance with nature is wearing the talisman and seal of longevity and immortality—this is the virtue of permanence. The nature of mind and sentient beings is without lustful disorder; therefore, upholding the precept of non-unchastity in accordance with the original nature is called entering and leaving without disorder. The nature of mind and sentient beings is thought-moment after thought-moment real, without any gap of falsehood; therefore, upholding the precept of non-false speech in accordance with nature is called going and returning without gap. These two correspond to the virtue of purity. The nature of mind and sentient beings is not intoxicated; therefore, upholding the precept of non-drinking in accordance with the original nature is called governing the entire body—this is the virtue of self. The nature of mind and sentient beings is bodhi itself, free from the suffering of craving; therefore, upholding the precept of non-stealing in accordance with the original nature is called establishing the root of the path—this is the virtue of bliss.
