1.47

初、通。約說約傳明如，約解約受明是。此既通釋，貫下別釋必該四教，故知法相是四所詮，佛是宣說四教之主，阿難是四聞持之人，當分而言四皆海量。

First, general. Clarifying 'thus' (*ru*) in terms of expounding and transmitting, and clarifying 'is' (*shi*) in terms of understanding and receiving. Since this is a general interpretation, running down through the specific interpretations it must encompass the four teachings; therefore we know that the characteristics of phenomena are that which is expounded by the four, the Buddha is the lord who proclaims the four teachings, Ānanda is the person who hears and upholds the four, and in terms of their respective stations, all four are vast like an ocean.
