1.56

初、破淺。欲明別理，先斥通非。通教三乘同聞即空，而鈍菩薩同二乘解，利根聞空不但空有兼能空空。既此各解，望別非如；空中兩證，證空尤劣，比中非是。

First, refuting shallowness. Wishing to clarify the principle of the Distinct [Teaching], [the author] first censures the fault of the Shared [Teaching]. In the Shared Teaching, the three vehicles together hear of identity with emptiness, yet dull bodhisattvas share the understanding of the two vehicles; those of sharp faculties hearing of emptiness not only [understand] the emptiness of existence, but can also empty emptiness. Since they have these separate understandings, looking toward the Distinct [Teaching], it is not 'thus'; of the two realizations of emptiness and middle, the realization of emptiness is particularly inferior, and compared to the middle, it is not 'right'.
