Second, the perfect, in two [parts]: first, showing its characteristics, in two [parts]: first, clearly showing the characteristics of practice, in two [parts]: first, upholding by grasping the intention, in two [parts]: first, attaining the name of awakening because of contemplating in accordance with the nature. The meaning of this passage is to take the fruition virtues suddenly as the initial practice. If one does not clearly realize that the sixth-consciousness mind is inherently evil, how could one in the initial mind cultivate the Tathāgata's practice and immediately contemplate the secret treasury? The fleshy eye is itself the Buddha, never altering its contemplation, yet seeing Muni and Mañjuśrī as equal. Jingxi clearly indicated that one must hear of inherent evil before cultivating the practices of the nature; this cannot be counterfeited.
