First, he sets forth analogies in terms of the body. The present body of the three actions that expresses the Dharma was originally an impure thing of flesh and blood. Next, he raises two similes: sandalwood is a fragrant tree; eraṇḍa is a foul-smelling tree. The *Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra* clarifies that King Ajātaśatru committed rebellions, and later, having seen the Buddha, his offenses were eliminated, whereupon he stated of his own accord: "I have seen in the world that from eraṇḍa seeds an eraṇḍa tree grows, but I have never seen eraṇḍa give birth to a sandalwood tree. Now for the first time I see a sandalwood tree born from an eraṇḍa seed. The eraṇḍa seed is my body; the sandalwood tree is the rootless faith in my mind."
