Second, existing through cultivation, they are distinct. If one does not distinguish cultivation and nature, they are identical; if the three do not mutually integrate, they are different. Because of being distinct and different, they are vertical; because of being aligned as one, they are horizontal. This would then conflict with the substance of the dharma that is explained. If one can wonderfully realize that it is only a single dharma-nature, yet it can accomplish one nature and two cultivations, this is called being three while identical to one. Accomplished through cultivation and nature, these three bodies are originally inherent in the single nature, which is called being one while identical to three. This can then be described as: the entirety of nature becomes cultivation, and the entirety of cultivation exists in nature; nature undergoes no change, yet cultivation is ever distinct. Only then does it accord with the profound and wonderful text that expresses it.
