Second, cessation and practice in transforming others. As the text says: 'Not withholding or taking by force is called cessation; using skillful means to encourage cultivation is called practice.' If one comprehensively discusses the ten kinds of cessation and practice, not killing and not stealing are already clarified in the commentary; the other eight are: not committing sexual misconduct and pure conduct; not lying and truthful speech; not speaking frivolously and straightforward speech; not speaking divisively and harmonizing disputes; not speaking harshly and constantly practicing gentle speech; non-greed and the contemplation of impurity; non-anger and the contemplation of loving-kindness; non-delusion and the contemplation of dependent origination—all of these are cessation and practice cultivated for oneself. Clarifying self and other together: oneself not committing the ten evils is called cessation; encouraging others not to commit the ten evils is called practice.
