Second, from "This is indeed" downward, explaining the intent behind using transgression. This refers to the aforementioned three persons who have long abided in the Dharma-door of inherent defilement and non-defilement; being able to manifest the practice of defilement, they are therefore called "desire that is non-desire"; and causing sentient beings to awaken to the nature right within desire, it is therefore called "using desire to stop desire." The analogy of the pin (xie): the character should be written as xie (榍), and is also written as wedge (xie 楔). The Shuowen says: "A wedge is a peg (jian). Jian is pronounced zi and lin cut." To drive out a former peg, one must rely on a latter peg; hence it is called "driving out a wedge with a wedge." "Using sound to stop sound": the seventh fascicle of the Da zhidu lun says, "It is like an administrative monk who raises his hand and calls out, 'All in the assembly, be silent!' This is using sound to block sound, not seeking sound."
