Second, the two vehicles, in two [parts]: first, setting aside the common to follow the specific, to clarify what is able to intoxicate. The ninety-eight proclivities consist of eighty-eight for the delusions of views and ten for the delusions of thought. The four entrenchments: the views of the three realms are combined as the entrenchment-ground of views, and the thoughts of the three realms are divided into three entrenchment-grounds. Not yet having vomited out ignorance is a metaphor comparing delusion to liquor. A person with half-malaria: the four entrenchments have already been eliminated, but ignorance still remains; half-healthy and half-sick, they are just like someone with malaria. This is also a metaphor in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra.
