Second, simultaneously rebuking the Hīnayāna along with the ordinary world, to clarify what is deluded. "Turning the drunk metaphor back upon them" means that the Buddha turned the metaphor of drunkenness back onto the two vehicles. According to the "Chapter on Lamentation," the bhikṣus spoke the metaphor of drunkenness to illustrate that ordinary beings transmigrating through impermanence and seeing permanence are like the drunken, while the Hīnayāna practitioners cultivating the contemplation of impermanence are like the sober. The Buddha then turned the metaphor of drunkenness upon the two vehicles, stating that viewing the truly permanent as impermanent is precisely the meaning of drunkenness; hence it says "the text turning the drunk metaphor back upon them." The character ren ("person") should be wen ("text"). From "In the world" onward, the wording is abbreviated: of the four inversions and four virtues, two of each are cited, implicitly illustrating one another.
