Second, from "Like" onward, the metaphors. In all, five matters are adduced, all illustrating that the perception of the nature is not yet fully clear. A bo is a large ship. The metaphors come from the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra. However, those ten metaphors all serve as metaphors for the perfect [teaching] to distinguish the ultimate, which is why it says "perceiving incompletely." Here, using them as metaphors for the separate [teaching] has two meanings: First, the ultimate fruition of the separate teaching merely equals the second practice of the perfect teaching, hence perceiving incompletely. Second, the principle of the two teachings is identical when the intention is grasped, but when its virtue is misunderstood, it is merely the isolated middle. Here it proceeds according to misunderstanding the intention, and therefore uses them to illustrate the separate teaching. The ten metaphors of the Tathāgatagarbha Sūtra are also like this. In the Mohe Zhiguan it is applied to the separate teaching, whereas in the Commentary on the Sixteen Contemplations it is revealed as the perfect teaching.
