Third, from "If not yet" onward, Śākyamuni discusses both to cause complete understanding. Since those of lower faculties are dull, merely discussing the source or the trace cannot bring about an anticipatory understanding of their mutual harmonization; therefore, Śākyamuni fully expounds the three bodies, namely the Dharmakāya, Saṃbhogakāya, and Nirmāṇakāya. Just as relying on the sky there is lightning, and relying on lightning there is light: the Dharmakāya is the principle, and the Saṃbhogakāya is wisdom. Since wisdom responds to the principle, it immediately raises the Nirmāṇakāya. The three bodies are mysteriously one, yet the one is not fixedly one; the three bodies are distinctly evident; therefore the chapter title is "Distinction of the Three Bodies." The Dharma and Saṃbhoga bodies are the source, and the Nirmāṇakāya is the trace; explaining both simultaneously gives rise to wondrous understanding, and deliberation and thought cease. This corresponds to the third cycle. These three turns all explain the Tathāgata's eternal theme to reveal the substance, intending to cause the hearers to arouse wisdom and realize the principle.
