Second, from "Much anger" onward explains the three destinies. When the mind possesses much anger and the like, bodily and verbal actions constitute angry karma, hence falling among snakes and vipers. Adducing the root encompasses the branch, hence it says "much anger". The subsequent "much desire" and so forth can all follow this pattern. As for snakes and vipers, the Erya says: "The viper is three inches broad, its head as large as a thumb." Guo Pu says: "Its body is three inches wide, its head like a thumb." This is simply another name for a snake called a viper. Flattery: Zhuangzi says: "Anticipating another's intention and speaking their words is called flattery." "Hungry ghosts facing starvation" and so forth adduces the result as difficult to endure, so one must explain repentance.
