Fourth, explaining that encountering a buddha is also a difficulty. The *Xingqixing jing* states: 'The talkative maiden, bouncing a basin against her belly, came before me and said: "Śramaṇa! Why do you not speak of your own household matters, instead of speaking of others' affairs? Now you enjoy yourself; do you not know my suffering? You previously had intercourse with me and caused me to become pregnant. Now, being close to the month [of delivery], I need ghee and oil to nurture the small child. You must provide it all to me." The King of the Devas transformed into a mouse, went inside her clothes and gnawed [the cord]; the basin suddenly fell to the ground. At that time the earth cracked open, and Ciñcā fell in her living body into the Avīci Hell.' In the "Kāśyapa Chapter" of the *Nirvāṇa Sūtra*, Sunakkhatta was the Buddha's son when he was a bodhisattva; after leaving home, he accepted, upheld, and explained the twelve divisions of scriptures, shattered the bonds of the desire realm, and attained the four dhyānas. Yet he associated with evil companions, fell away from the four dhyānas, gave rise to evil wrong views, and declared that there is no Buddha, no Dharma, and no nirvāṇa. Seeing the Buddha approaching from afar, he gave rise to an evil and erroneous mind and fell into the Avīci Hell. Devadatta was the Buddha's cousin, yet he committed three heinous offenses himself—namely, shedding the Buddha's blood, disrupting the Saṃgha that turns the wheel of Dharma, and killing an arhat. He instructed Ajātaśatru to successfully murder his father and prepare to harm his mother. Furthermore, with an evil mind, he hid poison under his ten fingernails, intending to kiss the Buddha's feet and pierce them to harm him. As he was heading toward Vulture Peak and left the city, the earth cracked open, and he entered Niraya alive. In these cases, encountering the Buddha turned into a great difficulty. However, the substance of the previous three phrases consists of mundane good that obstructs the cultivation of the uncontaminated; hence they are called difficulties. This phrase involves the commission of heinous offenses, which might seem dissimilar to the above. Yet because encountering the Three Jewels is the supreme good, defying it constitutes a difficulty. It can also be analogized to the above, as being an obstruction to the Path with respect to what is good.
