Second, making vows for the sake of others has two parts: first, dividing the text; second, from "all" downward, explaining the meaning, which has two parts: first, vowing to act as a medicine king to uproot suffering; second, vowing to act as a jewel king to bestow joy. This ability to uproot and ability to bestow is unconditional compassion. That which is uprooted and that which is bestowed must be discussed in terms of the ten turns: namely, retributive effects cultivating causes, śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas of the four teachings, [the land of] expedients, and [the land of] real reward. Now, the king of medicinal trees uproots the suffering of these ten kinds of practitioners, and the king of jewels should bestow joy upon these ten kinds of persons. One should resolve the text on bestowing and uprooting with this meaning.
