Second, below the words "or at times," mutually inferring the master. The four subtleties are form, smell, taste, and touch. The Da zhidu lun says: "Earth has form, smell, taste, and touch; because it is heavy, it cannot act on its own. Water lacks smell, so its movement surpasses earth. Fire lacks smell and taste, so its force surpasses water. Wind lacks form, smell, and taste, so its movement surpasses fire." "Mind without ..." and so forth: comparing the mind to the four great elements, because it does not depend on the subtle elements, it is superior and hence is considered the master. But in terms of being afflicted, it again fails to be the master.
