初三世。過去破神常者，過去已滅，故非常也。現在破神我者，五果皆五陰和合，故無我也。未來破神斷者，未來有果，故非斷滅。皆言神者，外執身神有斷常等也。此三世義世共傳之，故云常塗所用。

First, the three periods. The past refutes the permanence of the spirit: the past has already perished, hence it is not permanent. The present refutes the spirit as a self: the five fruits are all combinations of the five aggregates, hence there is no self. The future refutes the annihilation of the spirit: the future has fruits, hence it is not annihilated. Stating "spirit" in all these refers to outsiders attaching to the spirit of the body as having permanence, annihilation, and so forth. This meaning of the three periods is commonly transmitted in the world, hence it is called "what is conventionally applied."
