Second, from "Since it does not" onward, vertical investigation. The grasping that conceptualizes phenomena is like an inchworm abandoning one to take another; because arising is refuted, it then conceptualizes non-arising, which is still grasping at inherent nature. Conceptualizing both-is and neither-is both rely upon arising; since they are entirely without principle, one again conceptualizes cessation, which also forms four attachments. Saying "cannot be attained" above all eight propositions is the contemplation of emptiness. "Neither cessation nor arising": only when both cessation and arising are examined and found to be unattainable does it finally receive the name of actual phenomena being unarisen.
