二、「此一」下，以橫竪結。竪擬諸經之位者，即向四經名字雖殊，但是住、行、向、地圓位耳，故名為竪。橫論一切諸位者，即攝四教凡聖諸位，如向消文是也。云云者，部在方等，故此化他必兼四益，橫攝諸位旨在其中。

'Vertically matching the stages of the various sūtras': namely, although the names in the four sūtras mentioned above differ, they are simply the round stages of abidances, practices, dedications, and grounds; hence they are called vertical. 'Horizontally discussing all the various stages': namely, subsuming all the stages of ordinary and noble in the four teachings, as the previous textual interpretation did. 'And so on': because the section is in the Vaipulya, this transforming of others must combine the four benefits, and the intent of horizontally subsuming all stages is contained within it.
