Second, from "immeasurable" onward, briefly explains the sūtra text. Third, from "The treatise says" onward, giving subsumes the six perfections. Fascicle twelve of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra, explaining the perfection of giving, states: "If a bodhisattva practices the perfection of giving and can generate the six perfections, this is called the fulfillment of the perfection of giving. How does giving generate the perfection of giving? There are lower, middle, and upper [grades]: giving food and drink or coarse items with a soft mind is called the lower; being able to give clothing and precious items is called the middle giving; being able to give one's head, eyes, blood, flesh, national wealth, wife, and children is called the upper. How does giving generate the perfection of morality? The bodhisattva contemplates that sentient beings do not know giving and therefore are impoverished in future lives and do evil; if they practice giving, they will have blessings and lack nothing in future lives, and thus will be able to maintain morality. How does it generate the perfection of forbearance? When the bodhisattva gives, if the recipient reviles them, makes great demands, demands at improper times, or demands what should not be demanded, the bodhisattva then contemplates: 'I now give seeking the Buddha path. Nor did anyone compel me to give; I do this for myself, so how could I give rise to anger?' Having contemplated in this way, they practice forbearance. How does it generate the perfection of vigor? When the bodhisattva gives, they constantly practice vigor, wishing to perform the two kinds of giving, diligently seeking wealth and Dharma to satisfy others. How does it generate the perfection of dhyāna? When the bodhisattva gives, they can eliminate stinginess and greed and practice single-mindedness, gradually eliminating the five hindrances; this is called the perfection of dhyāna. Furthermore, the mind relies on giving to enter the first dhyāna up to the cessation-samāpatti. How does it generate the perfection of wisdom? When the bodhisattva gives, they know that there is retribution without doubt, and are able to break through wrong views and ignorance. Furthermore, distinguishing that pure and impure gifts result in different retributions is called generating wisdom. Therefore, it is said that the meaning of giving subsumes the six." The other five perfections also mutually subsume one another; as that is not the intention of the present text, it discusses only giving for the time being, because it is the foremost of the six and convenient for subsuming and generating [the others].
