Third, the first question and answer explains that outside of the Dharma there is nothing remaining. Saying that the Dharma does not produce the reward or non-reward: the non-reward is the response. The objection says: The three bodies are just the one Dharma realm; how could there be that which can produce and that which is produced? And as for saying "relying on the Dharma": this is reliance of the identical substance; relying and yet directly being the function of the whole substance, the function in turn relies on the substance. The second question and answer: the reward is the Dharma realm, the shadow is the response body, and the non-shadow is the transformation body, because it manifests the nine realms and is not the Buddha image. The note below the Dharma realm says "and so forth", which should further explain that the response is the Dharma realm: the three are equally the secret treasury—how could a single body not be the Dharma realm? Third, the question and answer from "Further, side-by-side..." onward explains that outside of capacity there is no response. That the three bodies are one substance may perhaps be believed by people, but the capacities to which they correspond are mostly regarded as other objects; therefore, it is now revealed to eliminate this doubt, in two [parts]: first, setting up side-by-side to reveal it. Movement is a metaphor for the capacity arising, unable to see the response. Motionlessness is a metaphor for the capacity being mature, being able to see the response. Water is a metaphor for the direct cause. The nature of peace and bliss: namely, Mahāparinirvāṇa, since it is the three virtues, its nature is necessarily wonderfully harmonious; how could it not be the Dharma realm? Therefore, the "Gate of Non-Duality of Self and Other" says: "The capacities of living beings are boundless, yet do not go beyond the three thousand. Though those capable of responding are many, they do not go beyond the ten realms. The living beings' capacity and the response accord; body and land are not biased. Together in the Eternally Quiescent Light, there is nothing that is not the Dharma realm." If one is dim about this meaning, one should not discuss our school.
