Second, from "Also the pure..." onward, citing texts as proof. Appearing in the world due to stimuli and attaining Buddhahood by means of living beings are universally known to all, being the same in all four teachings. Now, explaining from the Perfect [teaching], one begins to exhaust the meaning of the sūtra: precisely because the natures of self and other are inherently non-dual, there can be that which can stimulate and that which can assist. Appearing in the world due to stimuli refers to the capacities of the ten realms stimulating the responses of the ten realms; because the nature of the hell beings and the nature of the Buddha's hell are non-dual, they are then able to stimulate and see the response of hell, and so forth up to stimulating the Buddha, which is also like this. In the discussion of stimulus and response in our school, all possessing the ten Dharma realms is to reveal non-duality. If the meaning were not so, not only could sentient beings not stimulate the Buddha, but also the ten places would not constitute the Dharma realm. One should deeply investigate this; one should deeply investigate this. Attaining Buddhahood by means of living beings means that sentient beings can create supreme conditions for attaining Buddhahood. Whether conforming or opposing, they all assist the Buddha's practice. Yet those who commit evil and rebel have the greatest efficacy: without Devadatta, how could the Buddha have attained the Way? But if evil dharmas were fundamentally not the Buddha-nature, how could they assist the bodhisattva in attaining Buddhahood? If the bodhisattva did not contemplate living beings as the Dharma realm, without the compassion of identical substance and without unconditioned practice, how could he accomplish the fruit of great bodhi? If outside the Buddha there were a single sentient being, it would not be the Buddha's Dharma realm; if outside sentient beings there were a Buddha, the Dharma realm would not be established. Without making this interpretation, one has not surpassed the Three Piṭakas, let alone the Shared and Distinct [teachings].
