Third, the Four Kings rejoice and take vows. As for "sorrow and joy" in the sūtra, they felt sorrow that they had not heard it in the past, and joy that they were now able to hear it; sorrow that others had not heard it, and joy that they themselves were able to hear it. As for "tears flowing copiously (henglu)", the pronunciation of ti is ti; ti means tears, and heng means criss-crossing. Ancient editions all read "flowing copiously (henglu)". It is not necessary to change it to the character jiao ("criss-crossing"). The Great Sūtra [Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra] is also like this; Dharmakṣema's translations often say henglu. Wang Can's "Denglou Fu" in the Wen Xuan says: "Sorrowing that my old homeland is cut off and blocked, / Tears fall across unrestrained." As for "joyous and serene (yijie)", yi means harmonious and pleased, and jie means relaxed and dispersed.
