First, fully explaining the four types of eloquence in comparison with the four teachings. The Tripiṭaka Teaching does not explain the great, but only speaks of the uncontaminated; hence it is called lesser eloquence. The Shared Teaching emerges from emptiness into the provisional, speaking of the dust-and-sand defilements and the eight gates within the three realms; this is called immeasurable eloquence. The Distinct Teaching is able to speak of both kinds of dust-and-sand defilements, within and beyond the realms; hence it is called dual eloquence. The Perfect Teaching discusses the ten realms wherein every phenomenon is the Middle, the feelings of the two extremes are obliterated, phenomena mutually pervade, the ultimate and the conventional are vividly apparent, and the three truths are the single truth; this is called great eloquence.
