Third, the single line indicates the Dharma-body: regarding 'having no awareness', etc., this meaning must be differentiated by contrasting it with retribution and response. There is only one great enlightenment, yet it possesses the three functions of quiescence, illumination, and neither-quiescence-nor-illumination; therefore they are called the three bodies. Enlightenment is illuminating awareness: because it can illuminate principle, it is the retribution body. Having no awareness is quiescence: because awareness can manifest bodily forms, it is the response body. Now saying 'having neither awareness nor non-awareness' means neither illuminating nor quiescent: awareness can double-negate and double-employ, which is called ultimate enlightenment; that is the Dharma-body. Therefore the three bodies are called three Buddhas. The three kinds of understanding are also like this: in terms of the body it is called awareness, and in terms of the mind it is called understanding; the three meanings are fully evident.
