Fourth, the ultimate [siddhānta]. "The origin is the Suvarṇaprabhāsa": this is what the "Chapter on the Four Kings" says: "The state affairs undertaken and the worldly treatises composed all rely on this sūtra." Regarding "supreme virtue and essential Way": "supreme" means exhausting the utmost of principle; "essential" means taking the one to encompass the many. It means that this correct treatise is the old law of former kings, being the utmost of virtue and the essence of the Way. The former three siddhāntas belong to the worldly, which are not yet fully differentiated; now this fourth one additionally covers the trans-worldly; therefore, both the origin and the branch are illuminated, causing the hearers to understand and awaken to the two kinds of ultimate truth. The dull only attain the worldly essential Way, which accords with the branch; the sharp awaken to the trans-worldly essential Way, which accords with the origin. Increasing heavenly virtue must also be divided in two: according with the branch, the benefit is merely rebirth in heaven; if according with the origin, the benefit is in the heaven of principle (yitian) and also encompasses the pure heaven (jingtian), because the Suvarṇaprabhāsa belongs to the Shared Teaching.
