Second, giving rise to vows. "Vow and practice supporting each other": practice is contemplative understanding; without this contemplative understanding, one cannot accomplish the vow; without the vow, practice will suffer regression. The Commentary's statement "having given birth seven days ago, up to the tree deity counting the fish" and so forth: this text looks back and explains the previous fourth passage on seeing the tigress that had given birth; the Commentary can be consulted. In the sūtra, from "from making this thought, saying" onward sets forth contemplative understanding. Contemplation has two kinds: first, auxiliary contemplation; second, primary contemplation. From the beginning up to "greatly loathsome and wearying" is the contemplation of the auxiliary path. Using the provisional imagination of the Tripiṭaka Teaching, it counteracts the mind that yearns for and clings to the dependent and proper retributions. From "therefore I now" onward is the primary contemplation. Up to "free of all defiling burdens" and so on is the contemplation of emptiness. "Immeasurable concentrations up to praised by all buddhas" is the contemplation of provisionality. From "realizing and accomplishing such up to Dharma joy" is the contemplation of the middle. Although the preaching is sequential, the cultivation must be in a single mind.
