First, identifying the persons. In the sūtra, Śuddhodana (Shutoudan or Yuetoudan) is translated here as "Pure Rice." Māyā is translated here as "Heavenly Queen." Tiaoda, also Devadatta, is translated here as "Bestowed by Heaven"; his parents prayed to heaven for a son, and heaven bestowed him upon them; he is the Buddha's paternal cousin. Gopī (Quyi) is translated here as "Bright Woman." Siddhārtha had three consorts: first, Gopī; second, Yaśodharā; third, Mṛgī; each having twenty thousand court ladies. The five bhikṣus were Kauṇḍinya, Aśvajit, Bhadrika, Daśabala-Kāśyapa, and Prince Kulika. Kauṇḍinya and Daśabala-Kāśyapa were from the mother's side; the remaining three were from the father's side. Śāriputra is translated here as "Son of Śārī" (Body); because the mother had a fine body and form, she was named Body, and since he was her son, he was named Son of Śārī. Maudgalyāyana is translated here as "Foreign Bean," which is a family name. In ancient times, a ṛṣi lived in the mountains and constantly gathered and ate mung beans, after which the clan was named; the venerable one is his descendant.
