Second, from the sūtra's "At that time..." onward, identifying the stūpa. In full, it is called stūpa; translated according to meaning, it is "square tomb" or "accumulated form," meaning that wood, stone, and jewels are piled high to make a sign. The Latter Section of the Cremation Sūtra states: "A Buddha stūpa is thirteen tiers high, with chattrāvali on top; a pratyekabuddha stūpa is eleven tiers; an arhat stūpa is four tiers; a cakravartin's stūpa has no tiers, because he has not transcended the three realms." The Twelve Conditions Sūtra states that the eight kinds of stūpas all have dew basins: a Buddha stūpa has eight tiers, a bodhisattva has seven tiers, a pratyekabuddha has six tiers, the fourth fruition has five tiers, the third fruition has four, the second fruition has three, the first fruition has two, and a cakravartin has one; ordinary monks have only plantain leaves and fiery gems. Although the two sūtras differ in explanation, ordinary monks have no tiers in either. Even though those erected in recent times have no dew basins, since they extend four eaves, they still usurp [the design of] the first fruition. If one follows the rule of plantain leaves and fiery gems, one will avoid usurping the higher sages; discerning persons should follow this. Śarīra is translated here as "relics of the body."
