Second, the line and a half from "Śrāvakas..." concerns the fact that neither noble ones nor ordinary beings have yet brought forth the radiance of [buddha-]nature. This is the tree goddess entreating and requesting the present Buddha to emerge from samādhi. Although the Buddha is in samādhi, his nature is clearly purified like lapis lazuli, transparent inside and out; illuminating capacities and giving rise to responses, he is wholly unmoved from quiescent samādhi. Although the Tathāgata has long since understood clearly, sentient beings have not yet brought forth this superior samādhi; therefore, the tree goddess repeatedly requests his appearance to awaken these capacities. She then adduces six similes to show that the physical bodies of śrāvakas are not the radiant body of the nature, and the true principle they realize is desolate, quiescent, and without awareness—like the vacuity of space, the smoke and flame of a lamp, the illusion of sorcery, an echo in a valley, a magical transformation by supernormal powers, or the moon in water, none of which possess real nature, and are incapable of being simultaneously quiescent and manifest. Sentient beings' nature is falsely present, entirely devoid of real marks, like what is seen in a dream.
