2.3
First, a general demonstration of upholding and violating in terms of phenomena and principle. If one wishes the practitioner to use the principle of non-killing to uphold the phenomenal non-killing, only then is it called an initial-mind upholding of the complete precepts. Now, in clarifying the contemplation of dharmas, one must distinguish emptiness and the middle. Contemplating dharmas as emptiness belongs to the skewed contemplation; looking toward the perfect, it is killing. One must realize that all dharmas are nothing other than the Middle Way and that worldly marks are all eternal—this is the precept of non-killing according to principle discussed now. Wishing to reveal this meaning, it distinguishes from humans and devas up to the ultimate perfect level; hence it says causes and fruits are of various kinds and different.
