Second, from "having taken..." downward, the retribution for stealing is clarified based on the sūtra. Grasping and abandoning having occurred frequently, this very state is called the retribution of the karmic act of stealing through poverty and distress. Because the distinct and complete teachings elucidate the retribution of transformation, it is not a matter of changing rebirths: the movement of a thought is karma, and transmutation is suffering. Hence the Awakening of Faith says: "When there is movement, there is suffering; the fruit is not separate from the cause." Being unable at the initial mind to頓cut off thought and deliberation suddenly causes the heaven of ultimate truth to be far away even though it is near; that is, it is abandoned and departed from.
