Second, obtaining signs. Regarding the 'kings of the twelve dreams': The Vaipulya Dhāraṇī Sūtra states: 'One first seeks auspicious dreams, twelve kinds in total; if one obtains any one sign, repentance is permitted.' The Brahma Net Sūtra states: 'If one violates the ten precepts, one should be taught to repent and must see auspicious signs. Auspicious signs mean the Buddha coming to rub one's crown, seeing light, seeing flowers, and so forth; then the offense is eradicated.' From 'calling out with a voice' onward: That sūtra explains that if this bodhisattva appears to the practitioner in a dream or during seated meditation, imprinting the practitioner's arm with a cintāmaṇi seal to make the characters for "offenses eradicated," or if one hears the voice of offenses being eradicated, then upon receiving this sign, one knows the offenses will certainly be eradicated. From 'although not' onward: Because one is in the sanctuary, it is not that there is no ritual performance, yet both are designated after what is superior; thus it is named 'obtaining signs'. The term 'phenomenal application' refers to ritual performance.
