First, four verses setting up the analogies, in two parts: first, refuting the ancients, in two parts: first, recounting; second, from "This meaning" onward, refuting. The preaching of the Buddhas is unerring in the three periods, and thus good in the beginning, middle, and end. The expressive words possess the Dharma, and thus their speech is skillful. The expressed [meaning] transcends feelings, and thus its meaning is profound and far-reaching. If it were uniformly devoid of meaning, how could one awaken to the eternal theme? Therefore we know the ancient masters were completely lost regarding the sūtra's purport.
