Third, from 'the new translation' downward, he cites scriptural evidence to show the characteristics of the errors. Where the sūtra discusses the first bhūmi covering those before the bhūmis as all possessing the four gates, the sūtra says: 'A bodhisattva on the first bhūmi desires to practice the path with marks'—this is the gate of existence; 'he applies much effort regarding markless dharmas'—this is the gate of emptiness; 'with one thought he desires to enter nirvāṇa, and with one thought he desires to enter birth-and-death'—this is the gate of both; 'his cultivation of the subtle, wondrous, secret treasury is not yet complete'—this is the gate of neither. From 'the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra' downward, he clarifies the correct understanding of the present text and reveals the errors of the former. The former belongs to the separate gates; these are the wrong views of clinging and disputation, not the wrong views of non-Buddhists.
