Third, presence, absence, division, and combination: first, explaining differences in presence and absence. The translation by Dharmakṣema of the Western Liang has eighteen chapters, lacking thirteen chapters; even when five chapters are divided out, it still lacks eight chapters. The translation by Paramārtha of the Liang has twenty-two chapters, adding the 'Chapter on the Three Bodies', 'Chapter on Purifying Obstacles', 'Chapter on the Utterly Pure Grounds', and 'Chapter on Fulfilling Vows by Relying on Emptiness'; excluding those divided out, it still lacks four chapters. Jñānagupta of the Sui produced twenty-four chapters, adding the 'Chapter on the Dhāraṇī of the Silver Master', which is the present 'Chapter on the Dhāraṇī of Non-attachment', and the 'Chapter on Entrustment'; excluding those divided out, it still lacks two chapters. The Tripiṭaka Master [Yijing] who revived [the teaching] under the Great Tang examined various Sanskrit manuscripts and translated their omissions, obtaining all the chapters and their titles in full, and additionally adding the 'Chapter on the Supreme Golden Dhāraṇī' and 'Chapter on the Wish-fulfilling Jewel', which were not in the older versions. Second, differences in division and combination: in the older versions, the 'Chapter on Observing Humans and Devas' and 'Chapter on Protecting the State' were combined under the title 'Chapter on the Four Heavenly Kings'. The 'Chapter on the Great Goddess Mahāśrī' and 'Chapter on the Great Goddess Mahāśrī Increasing Wealth and Goods' were combined into the 'Chapter on Goddess Puṇyavardhanā'. The 'Chapter of Praise by the Bodhisattvas of the Ten Directions', 'Chapter of Praise by Ruciraketu Bodhisattva', 'Chapter of Praise by the Bodhi Tree Deity', and 'Chapter of Praise by the Great Goddess Sarasvatī' were combined under the title 'Chapter of Praising the Buddha'. Now they are each divided according to differences in persons or distinctions in events, thus making thirty-one chapters.
