Regarding the gateway of subsuming deeds: according to the *Fahua lun*, it subsumes ten kinds of merits. Here we make eleven, because in the second category of subsuming merits, it subsumes three phrases, dividing it into two: first, subduing the mundane; second, subduing the supramundane. Since the sequence here differs from that text, we divide the second into two merits, making eleven kinds: First, subsuming the merit of non-disobedience, because of acting in accordance with the Tathāgata's teaching; as the sūtra says: 'able to well subdue.' Second, subsuming superior merit; as the sūtra says: 'like great elephant kings.' Third, subsuming merit; as the sūtra says: 'their outflows already eliminated, without remaining afflictions.' Fourth, subsuming the merit of subduing supramundane trainees; as the sūtra says: 'their minds well liberated, through wisdom well liberated.' Fifth, subsuming the merit of fulfillment, because of fulfilling the stage of training; as the sūtra says: 'what was to be done having been completed.' Sixth, subsuming the merit of transcending all: first, transcending craving; second, transcending the seeking of livelihood, offerings, and respect; third, transcending the higher and lower realms and having transcended the stage of training; as the sūtra says: 'having abandoned all heavy burdens, having attained their own benefit, having exhausted the fetters of existence.' Seventh, subsuming the merit of subduing the mundane; as the sūtra says: 'having attained great mastery.' Eighth, subsuming the superior merit of what is to be done; 'what is to be done' means making offerings in accordance with Dharma, respecting and honoring the Tathāgata; as the sūtra says: 'abiding in pure precepts.' Ninth, subsuming the merit of acting to benefit sentient beings; as the sūtra says: 'skill in means, adorned with wisdom.' Tenth, subsuming progressive merit; as the sūtra says: 'having realized the eight liberations.' Eleventh, subsuming the merit of being foremost; as the sūtra says: 'having reached the other shore.' This merely briefly correlates them to the sūtra text; the full explanation of the text is differentiated in the root *Fahua shu*. The verse says: / 'Non-disobedience, superior, merit; / Subduing, fulfillment, the three kinds of transcendence; / Subduing the world, what is to be done; / Benefiting, progressive, and foremost.'
