Commentary: In answering the first question, there are four [parts]. This is the fourth, obtaining protection, which has two [sections]: first, obtaining protection, and later, accepting and praising. This is the first. The differences of the ten grounds constitute ten sections. Each section is divided into four: first, indicating the name of that which can protect; second, directly stating the divine incantation; third, praising the superiority of the Dharma, because it was spoken by many buddhas; fourth, explaining the benefits of protection. Among the four dhāraṇīs, this is the incantation dhāraṇī. Because it is attained through practicing giving, it is named 'Merit'. The other names should be understood accordingly based on their practices. In praising the superiority, there are two parts: first, praising [it], and next, the ground being protected. The benefits of protection are two: first, freedom from difficulties; second, non-retrogression. From 'If anyone recites and upholds this...' onward refers to freedom from the five difficulties: first, introducing; next, listing; and finally, concluding. As for the five difficulties: first, vicious beasts; second, evil ghosts; third, hostile bandits; fourth, calamities and disasters such as water and fire; fifth, the pains of the three [lower realms] and seven [rebellions], and so on. Together with the concluding passage, it can be understood. 'Not forgetting' is the second, enabling non-retrogression; the remaining nine should be understood accordingly. The second dhāraṇī is named 'Abiding in Good Ease and Bliss'; attained through upholding the precepts, it is named 'Abiding in Good Ease and Bliss'. Attained through practicing patience, it is named 'Hard-to-Conquer Power'. Attained through practicing vigor to successfully accomplish [wholesome qualities], it is named 'Great Benefit'. Attained through cultivating the power of concentration to draw forth all merits, it is named 'Adornment of Various Merits'. Attained through practicing wisdom, it is named 'Complete Wisdom'. Attained through practicing skillful means, it is named 'Supreme Conduct of the Dharma'. Attained through practicing the ten inexhaustible vows, it is named 'Inexhaustible Treasury'. Attained through obtaining the four analytical knowledges to broadly benefit living beings, it is named 'Immeasurable Gate'. Because wisdom can shatter vajra-like hindrances, the obtained dhāraṇī is named 'Shattering the Vajra Mountain'. The remaining nine names of the attained dhāraṇīs are matched and explained in this order. Because the rest of the text is the same, it is not further analyzed.
