贊曰：品文分四，一舉事欲陳誡眾令聽、二正為廣說令知宿緣、三「妙幢汝當知」下結會今古許為授記、四眾聞發心願當修學。末一頌是樹神名堅牢，亦名地神。樹名畢鉢羅，佛於彼成道，名菩提樹。此即初也。

Commentary: The text of the chapter is divided into four parts: first, raising the matter to state it and admonishing the assembly to listen; second, properly and extensively expounding it to make them know past conditions; third, from 'Ruciraketu, you should know' onward, bringing together past and present and promising to bestow a prophecy; fourth, hearing it, the assembly generates the mind [for bodhi] and vows to cultivate and learn it. The last verse is: the tree goddess is named Dṛḍhā, and also named earth goddess. The tree is named Pippala; under it the Buddha realized the Way, so it is called the Bodhi-tree. This is the first.
