Commentary: Below, it is explained that it was in order to seek all these merits that [the Buddha] practiced and succeeded. This demonstrates that contemplating emptiness is superior and obtains five benefits, thereby encouraging people to cultivate and learn it. As for the five superior benefits, the *Treatise on the Eighteen Kinds of Emptiness* says: 'First, it eliminates an inferior mind and generates right exertion; second, it eliminates arrogance and generates a mind of reverence; third, it eliminates false notions and generates practices of loving-kindness and compassion; fourth, it eliminates the view of self and generates prajñā contemplation; fifth, it eliminates fearful mind and takes joy in accepting the Saddharma.' In the eight verses below, they are divided into four parts: First, 'For this reason, throughout immeasurable kalpas' clarifies the initial generation of right exertion—carrying out the activities of right exertion throughout immeasurable kalpas, as well as the fifth, taking joy in accepting the Saddharma throughout immeasurable kalpas. Next, the single line 'Reverently making offerings to all the Tathāgatas' clarifies eliminating arrogance and generating a mind of reverence. Because a mind of reverence is generated, one is further able to practice the ten offerings.
