Third, resolving difficulties: Question: If the previous chapter clarified the object in order to bring about understanding, and had not yet spoken of cultivation, how is it that upon hearing the teaching they understood emptiness and gave rise to vows? Answer: The previous [chapter] directly clarified the object, and according to what was heard they cultivated in parts; hence there was benefit attained. This [chapter] directly clarifies cultivation; therefore the devī entreats: 'May you only please explain for us the method of cultivating the profound principle.' Furthermore, previously, upon hearing of emptiness, they generated non-conceptual wisdom and the benefit of practice; later, they are made to generate cultivation, [involving] the two kinds of wisdom and the two benefits. Furthermore, previously, those of sharp faculties attained benefit upon hearing the teaching; this [chapter] is for those of dull faculties. Question: The previous three chapters were spoken without being requested; why does this chapter wait for a request before being spoken? Answer: To cause the Dharma to abide long and to reveal the Buddha's great compassion, it was spoken without being requested. To cause thirst and reverence to arise and to accord with what is needed by [their] capacities, it was spoken by reason of a request. Thus it is not uniform. Furthermore, the former was cultivation for the assembly present then, while this is for practitioners of later times. Furthermore, in the previous chapter, those who had cultivated for a long time were able to cultivate according to what they heard; this chapter is for both proximate and distant cultivations alike.
