Commentary: The fifth major section of the chapter: the Four Kings celebrate with joy and protect and uphold it. There are four parts: first, hearing the verses, their minds rejoice, that is, mind rejoicing and body leaping. Second, from "said to the Buddha" downward, uttering words to express themselves, having three aspects: 1. hearing what was never before heard; 2. joy of body and mind—according to the Humane Kings Sūtra, first-ground bodhisattvas act as the Four Heavenly Kings and attain realization of non-retrogression, therefore upon hearing the profound Dharma, grief and joy bring tears, and their whole bodies tremble; 3. obtaining what was never before obtained, namely realizing inconceivable things. Third, from "scattering heavenly māndārava" downward, scattering flowers in offering. Fourth, from "having made this supreme [offering]" downward, making vows to protect and uphold, which has two parts: first, physical protection; second, from "with the light of wisdom" downward, intellectual protection, which has three aspects: 1. causing them to remember; 2. bestowing dhāraṇī; 3. causing the Dharma to be propagated and circulated without cessation.
