Second, explaining the name: In Sanskrit it is *cintā*, which is translated here as 'as desired' (*ruyi*). The original word simply means 'thought', having the sense of mental deliberation; 'as' (*ru*) is added for its meaning. *Maṇi* is translated here as 'precious jewel' (*baozhu*); this is a metaphor. A *dhāraṇī* is the teaching (dharma). Just as a jewel can cause one to be free from all calamities and disasters and to have one's wishes fulfilled as the heart desires, this spell is also like that; it is named from the metaphor. It ought to be called 'The Chapter on the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Dhāraṇī'—hence below it refers to the divine spell of the wish-fulfilling jewel—because the text is abbreviated. Another explanation: this very retention is named the wish-fulfilling jewel, the teaching being named after the metaphor; therefore it says 'there is a dhāraṇī named the wish-fulfilling jewel.' This name does not belong to the six types of compound analysis.
