Below is the Buddha properly speaking it for them, which has four parts: first, speaking the names of the lightning-kings; second, the benefit of hearing them; third, properly speaking the spell; fourth, the method of reciting the spell. This [passage] speaks the names of the lightning. The sound produced when clouds strike each other is called thunder; thus the *Abhidharmakośa-śāstra* says, 'It is like the sound of clouds.' That which emits light is called lightning; the spirits presiding over lightning are called kings. According to the *Lokasthiti-sūtra*, it says: 'In the eastern direction the dense-less lightning and in the western direction the falling-radiance lightning touch each other, adhere to each other, rub each other, and strike each other; because of this, radiant light is produced within the boundaries of the clouds in the sky, and is named lightning. The eastern lightning is named Dense-less, the southern is called Along-the-Current, the western is called Falling-Radiance, and the northern is called Hundred-Thousand-Tree Lightning-Radiance.' They are named after their presiding spirits. As for their difference from the names in this sūtra, either there are many spirits, or the translations differ. *Agata* is translated here as 'come'. *Sūtra* (translated here as 'such') *maṇi* (as before).
