Next is the second part, the World-Honoured One expounding for her, which has three sections: first, admonishing the assembly to listen; next, beginning with "in the past," recounting the historical background; finally, beginning with "at that time, Balendra-," presenting the correct law of the past. Recounting the historical background has eight aspects: 1) the teacher and the one taught; 2) beginning with "at that time," clarifying the teaching transmitted—the "Lord of the World" is the Brahmā king, who cultivated the four immeasurables before becoming lord of the world, making it clear that teaching arising from loving-kindness and compassion will surely pull out suffering and grant joy; 3) beginning with "formerly, when I," clarifying the condition for obtaining the teaching; 4) beginning with "my royal father," clarifying the place where he heard the teaching; 5) beginning with "relying on this," clarifying his ability to practice and study; 6) beginning with "today, you too," admonishing the son to cultivate accordingly; 7) beginning with "what is called," hearing the admonition and requesting instruction; 8) beginning with "listen well now," enjoining him to listen and consenting to expound. The meaning of hearing it from his father and in turn instructing his son is that the bond between father and son is profound, so the instruction will surely bring actual benefit; therefore he urges listeners to revere it and practice accordingly.
