Below, it explains his saving the fish, in eight [parts]: first, father and sons traveling abroad. Second, from 'saw birds and beasts' onward, seeing an unusual sign. Third, from 'The guild-master's son then' onward, the bodhisattva's reflection. Fourth, from 'He then followed them' onward, having reflected, seeking and observing. Fifth, from 'saw a large pool' onward, thereupon seeing the dying fish. Sixth, from 'Having seen them, Jalavāhana' onward, immediately giving rise to compassion. Seventh, from 'At that time, a tree deity' onward, the tree deity urging him to save them, within which there are three: 1. manifesting its body, because of the urgent crisis; 2. from 'spoke as follows' onward, praising him, to lead him to generate resolve; 3. from 'O good son! You who truly possess' onward, urging him to save them, so that it accords with the meaning of his name. Within this there are again three: first, setting forth the exhortation; next, from 'There are two reasons' onward, explaining the exhortation; and from 'You should now' onward, concluding the exhortation. Eighth, from 'At that time, Jalavāhana' onward, undertaking the rescue according to the request. Within this there are again six: 1. asking how many there were; 2. from 'The tree deity answered' onward, answering that there were ten thousand; 3. from 'O Devī' onward, redoubling his compassion; 4. from 'At that time, this large pool' onward, clarifying the suffering of the fish; 5. from 'Seeing this guild-master' onward, the fish hoping to be saved; 6. from 'Having seen this, the guild-master's son' onward, the true rescue out of compassion. Within this there are again two: first, rescuing them from suffering with a compassionate mind; later, from 'He further reflected' onward, giving happiness with a loving mind. Therefore the sūtra says: 'Proclaiming the joy of the True Dharma (saddharma) can serve as the cause for experiencing joy in future lives.' The first, rescuing from suffering, has two: first, giving water; later, from 'O Devī, at that time the guild-master's son' onward, bestowing food. Giving water has eleven [aspects]: this first, searching everywhere without finding water; second, from 'Looking off to one side again' onward, providing shade for the time being; third, from 'He further investigated' onward, searching for the pool's source; fourth, from 'At that time, beside this river' onward, seeing the source breached; fifth, from 'so he thought' onward, considering it difficult to repair; sixth, from 'At that time, the guild-master's son' onward, seeking elephants from the king; seventh, from 'At that time, the great king' onward, the king ordering them to be given immediately; eighth, from 'Having received the king's order, that minister' onward, the official in charge allowing him to choose freely; ninth, from 'At that time, Jalavāhana' onward, obtaining the elephants as desired; tenth, from 'also borrowed many leather bags from a tavern' onward, borrowing the wine skins; eleventh, from 'went to the place where the water was breached' onward, transporting water to replenish the pool so that it became full again.
