Sūtra: At that time, the World-Honoured One sat down cross-legged upon the seat, upright in body and with correct mindfulness, and told the bhikṣus: "Do you wish to see the original relics of that ascetic bodhisattva of the past?" The bhikṣus said: "We wish to see them." The World-Honoured One then pressed the earth with his hand adorned with the marks of a hundred merits; at that time the great earth underwent the six kinds of shaking and immediately split open, and a caitya of the seven jewels suddenly welled up, with nets of various jewels adorning its top. When the great assembly saw this, they gave rise to thoughts of what is rare. At that time, the World-Honoured One arose from his seat, paid homage, circumambulated it to the right, and returned to his original seat. He told Ānanda: "You may open the door of this caitya." At that time, Ānanda immediately opened its door and saw a casket of the seven jewels interspaced and decorated with rare gems. He said to the Buddha: "World-Honoured One, there is a casket of the seven jewels adorned with diverse gems." The Buddha said: "You may open the casket." At that time, Ānanda received the instruction and, having opened it, saw that there were relics as white as mother-of-pearl, snow, and the kumuda flower. He then said to the Buddha: "The casket contains relics of an extraordinarily wondrous colour." The Buddha said: "Ānanda, you may bring the bones of this Mahāsattva." At that time, Ānanda took the bones and offered them to the World-Honoured One. Having received them, the World-Honoured One told the bhikṣus: "You should look upon the surviving bodily relics of the ascetic bodhisattva," and he spoke a verse, saying: / "The bodhisattva's wisdom associated with supreme virtue, / Courageous, vigorous, and diligent, perfected the six perfections. / Always cultivating without cessation for the sake of bodhi, / His great relinquishment was firm, his mind free of weariness. / You bhikṣus should all pay homage to the bodhisattva's original body; / These relics are indeed perfumed by the fragrance of immeasurable morality, concentration, and wisdom— / The most supreme field of merit, extremely difficult to encounter." / At that time, the bhikṣus and the great assembly all reverently pressed their palms together with wholehearted devotion, bowed their heads in homage to the relics, and praised it as unprecedented. Then Ānanda stepped forward, paid homage at the Buddha's feet, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honoured One, the Tathāgata Great Master transcends all and is revered by all sentient beings. For what cause and condition do you pay homage to these bodily bones?" The Buddha told Ānanda: "Because of these bones I quickly attained unexcelled, complete bodhi. In order to repay past kindness, I now pay homage."
